Introducing PerfomX Downhill Team featuring Remi Gauvin

by Ryan Kuhn
May 19, 2010 at 20:00

New on the mountain bike scene, PeformX Downhill Team has its sights set on elevating Canadian talent to World Cup level.

For 2010, the team has taken BC Jr. Expert rider Remi Gauvin under its wing. To date, Remi has won the first five of five races, including Sea Otter and the first Pro GRT race in Port Angeles, Washington. His stellar success is turning heads around the world, and many are asking, who is PerformX?

Learn a lot more inside (movie too),

(Don't miss the PerformX video at the bottom of the page!)

Based out of Pemberton, British Columbia, PerformX is owned by renowned athlete trainer Todd Schumlick. For the past 12 years Todd has trained some of the top motocross athletes, and for the past couple years, Canada’s top World Cup rider Steve Smith.

Partnering with Todd is Ryan Kuhn, co-manager and coach for PerformX Downhill. Ryan has been involved in many aspects of mountain biking as a racer, race organizer and trail advocate for more than a decade. He is also a professional journalist with extensive experience in communications and marketing, complimenting Todd’s expertise and passion.

“Ryan and I met at Crankworx and agreed there needed to be a racer development program with the focus seen in other sports such as motocross,” says Todd. “Canada, and British Columbia in particular, has a unique problem – with so much amazing riding and a world renowned freeride scene, there hasn’t been the focus to train and be mentally and physically prepared to compete at the world level.”

Todd and Ryan began talking to promising junior DH racers across Canada in the fall of 2009, which lead them to Remi Gauvin. Remi, who is from Vancouver Island, BC, embodies the characteristics Todd and Ryan were looking for – focus, commitment and oozing natural talent. It was then that Remi began training with Todd in preparation for 2010.

“Todd has a unique approach to training and it’s paying off,” says Remi. “Knowing I’ve put in all the hard work allows me to trust my ability and strength, and focus on winning races. Sea Otter is a pedaly course and I’ve always considered myself more of a technical rider, but I smashed it on my Evil Revolt, and am happy with the results…also, getting in some riding with Steve (Smith) is building my speed and confidence.”

PerformX’s focus has attracted generous support from premiere brands in the industry, including Evil Bikes, Troy Lee Designs, Spank Industries, SRAM, Oakley and recently Elka Suspension.

“The Evil Revolt and Faction bikes we’ve put together are works of art,” says Ryan. “Remi couldn’t be happier with his set up and, with the support of PerformX, he’s 100 per cent focused on his training and winning races.”

Colin, your result was a timekeeper error unfortunately, which was caught that day, and Remi was on top of the podium. They accidentally posted the incorrect results on the website. I have been told by the organizers the website will be corrected to reflect this.

flag irishcolin (May 20, 2010 at 11:31)
They have the start time and finish time posted. The timekeeper error was at the race; they had posted my time with a False Start DQ on it because the kid in front of me went at 1, not go, and then attributed his FS to me, because everything was written down on paper with sharpie.

Sorry Colin, you're time was actually a 1:55:60 according to the time sheet. The website results are incorrect.

Hey Colin dude I've been there....it sometimes hurts to bite your tongue but it can prove to hurt less than complaining too hard.....keep the sportsmanship in it and show the time keepers and organizers the respect they deserve by going with their decision. Nothing wrong with second in a high caliber field like that, if you won or if he won you should be both be proud. Show up next year and prove that this year was a timing error.

My start start time was 35:00:00, with an end time of 36:35:60 = 1:35:60. That's what they posted, making me the fastest man on the mountain that day, then everyone wanted them to check it again, and they saw that there was a red sharpie "FS" near my name; indicating a false start, and then the head referee Josh gave me a 20 second deficient for a false start, and posted the times again. Huge bummer, now they have the correct times on the website, but according to local and supposed 2nd place Kyle Thomas; they can't even get the website right? Seriously, let's get things straight on this race, because I would like to read the real results. Just for kicks and giggles.

Sorry dude, your start time was TYPED inccorrectly on the time sheet. According to the HAND WRITTEN sheet (the offical one, use at the bottom of the hill) you ran a 1:55:60

Good for him, 1 rider to start is better than a bunch of guys and no rider. LOL Besdies the kids got talent so thats the kid you want.
What if Iron horse had only 1 rider back in the beginning I dont know say Sam Hill...

Good job and the kids got a future raw talent and totally willing to learn.
Look forward to seeing this kids future in DH...

it,s good to see someone backing new young talent in this way, it needs to happen right across the sport in all countries, it still amazes me tha t britain(england in particular has some of the best riders in the world!) even though we have no ski lifts or big mountains to ride, i guess we have a strong race scene which helps. canada should rule downhill with its infastructure and natural terrain, the future looks bright now more people seem to be getting the racing bug, and not the freeride one so much.

flag E-Walk (May 20, 2010 at 16:41)
Yes, Canada has amazing riding and our downhill scene is getting bigger than ever especially with the world champs at Mount-Sainte-Anne this year, but a thing to remember is Canada is the second largest country in the world but our population is only around 30million people.

I dont doubt he is a nice kid but at the race I was at, he wasnt overly outgoing, wouldnt really to me much. I guess he was "in the zone" but still he wasn't the smiling happy kid I saw in these videos. Still stoked that my times were under 3 seconds from his at that race. haha

as you can see from the video, you can apply to be in the team, also trainers are needed. That was the point i got from the video, or did i miss understand the point? This is really good, that there are more teams coming, it makes the sport more popular and this will defntly have to lead to somewhere... Good luck and keep up the good work.

ooh man, being sponsored and racing's gotta be awesome, but I dunno if I'd want to be sponsored, cos it means being away all the time and taking the fun out of riding (or so it seems to me)
